09-08-2025Well the script writer forget the most important point of the book / Michael's purpose:True Gravity is the ability to "see" the lines of gravity, whether on the green or on the fairway.Without explaining/showing what True Gravity means, the movie is just another random movie on the origins of golf - at a very modest level. With graphic capabilities of what they are today, it is a shame Murphy's book was misinterpreted.

09-08-2025If you treasure the book, as I do, you'll want to see the movie, but go in with low expectations. Frankly, don't even bother. They missed the point and, for me, the casting is all wrong. Michael comes off as childish and petulant, instead of emotional and thoughtful. Shivas is portrayed as a swaggering, twisted lout, not the larger than life, deeply intellectual Zen-masterof the links that is portrayed in the book. Too much Charles Bronson, not enough Yoda. I wanted to love it, but couldn't. Sorry. Two stars only because most of the golf swings at least looked like real golf swings.

En route to India in 1956, a young American philosophy student, Michael Murphy (Mason Gamble, Rushmore), takes a detour to the legendary Links of Burningbush. Seeking to enjoy one last round before giving up his beloved game, he is unexpectedly paired with the mysterious, mischievous golf pro Shivas Irons (David O'Hara, Braveheart, The Departed). The wild adventure he shares with his enigmatic teacher over the next 24 hours will change Murphy's perception of golf and life indelibly. GOLF IN THE KINGDOM, with original music from musician Dame Evelyn Glennie (Touch the Sound), is adapted from Michael Murphy's 1972 classic novel, the best-selling work of fiction ever written about the game, deemed "a masterpiece on the mysticism of golf" by the San Francisco Chronicle.
